John McGrath

John joined the Royal School Manchester Governing Body in October 2016 and has worked for the past eight years at YHA, formerly the Youth Hostel Association, where as Head of Department and member of the Senior Leadership Team, he holds direct responsibility for a network of sixty two franchised and affiliated Youth Hostels across England, Wales and the Channel Islands. He also heads up the Procurement function.
Educated at St Mary’s College Crosby and later achieving a degree in Marketing at Liverpool John Moores University, he initially spent eight years in the Merseyside Police before changing career to the hospitality industry, where his roles as multi-site manager and operations manager have been with Whitbread for sixteen years, with responsibility for branded restaurants and Premier Inn Hotels, and latterly Marston’s for six years.
YHA ‘s mission is to “Enhance the lives of all young people” especially those with challenging lives, and this commitment provides the backdrop to the work John now undertakes. He believes that the ethic of working to enrich the experiences of young people will bring synergy to the role as Governor of the Royal School.
Married for thirty six years, John has three grown up children, and lives in North Wales where his interests include producing cacophony in a music studio he has built.
