Dietary Issues & How to Promote Experimentation

Date:
18th October 2017

If you care for a child or young person with autism and severe learning difficulties, you are eligible for a comprehensive range of support from Seashell Trust.

This is the first of several sessions aimed at helping families deal with everyday issues like mealtimes, communication, behaviour and looking for ways to help your child become more independent.

In this session, Royal College Manchester tutor Lauren Miller will address one topic that comes up over and over again: How do I help my son or daughter around food?

Common issues around mealtimes include sensory issues (taste, texture, smell, appearance), a reluctance to try new things, difficulties communicating likes/dislikes and a reliance on a very small number of acceptable foods. It's no wonder that so many families find food issues so stressful!

As one of our autism-qualified teachers, Lauren helps young people and their families find the most appropriate coping strategies to make mealtimes manageable and even fun. In this session, Lauren will share some of her work around dietary issues and how young people can be encouraged to experiment with new foods.

Join us for tea and coffee from 5.45pm with the presentation running 6:00pm - 7:00pm.
