A 200km cycle ride in commemoration of the Battle of the Somme centenary has raised over £5,000 for charity.

Engineering recruitment business Morson International team of 21 cyclists, including its CEO Ged Mason, cycled a 200km route will following the Battle of the Somme frontline during the year which marks its centenary.

The team visiting a number of memorials and graveyards in the area to pay their respects during the ride, including the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge pictured.

The annual fundraising bike ride this year was in support of Salford-based Morson's charities of the year Seashell Trust and Springhill.

It also marked 10 years of Morson’s Charity Committee which has raised £327,000 for good causes over the last decade.

Abbey Donnell-Jones, one of the two women on the team, said: “I love a challenge; the harder the better and this definitely fit the bill. What’s more it’s an opportunity to raise money for two fantastic charities and give something back to society and those in need.”

The team faced a gruelling schedule of up six hours a day in the saddle but it was not just the cyclists who were volunteering their time.

Adrian Head, in his fifth year on the travelling support team, said “I’m a great believer in giving back what you take in life. I work with great people who ensure they give back to their community.”

Riding alongside the Morson team was Dominic Tinner, head of fundraising for the Seashell Trust, one of the charities for which the ride was raising money.

He said: “It was a pleasure to ride with the Morson team and a privilege to visit a number of the cemeteries and memorials commemorating the fallen from all the countries of the Commonwealth during this, the centenary year of the Battle of the Somme.”
