Living at Seashell
Accommodation
Seventeen home-from-home houses, built in 2015/16 and specifically adapted for children and young adults with a range of disabilities provide a pleasant and attractive living environment in a community setting within Sir Norman Stoller Way.
Our 4-bedroomed en suite houses, most of which are two storey with some single storey houses provide a range of environments which can offer both low stimulus or high levels of structure depending on need. We encourage our children and young adults to participate in making the environment as person-centred as possible, such as displaying their own art work and shopping for household items.
Social and Leisure Activities
Children and young adults are encouraged and supported to participate in a wide range of social and leisure activities that are stimulating and fun, both on site and in the local community. We create individual activity timetables and ensure they take into account preference whilst enabling the achievement of long-term goals as part of a person-centred approach across education and residence.
It is our ethos that children and young adults develop skills both on and off site with an emphasis on independence and communication skills. Staff work closely together along with other professionals, parents/carers and the children and young people to ensure that therapy, communication, daily living skills, social, creative and behaviour support programmes continue in all areas of life.
More about our accommodation
Each child or young adult will have their own en-suite bedroom which can be decorated to suit their own preference. Houses provide communal lounges, kitchens and dining areas and in some accommodation there is an additional sensory room.
All houses provide access to computers, with wi-fi access and Skype which can be particularly useful when a child or young adult lives a distance from the family and encourages frequent contact and communication.
Everyone is encouraged to develop self-care and living skills in the home, including practical tasks such as shopping, cleaning, cooking and support to access the community. We create opportunities for children and young adult to integrate into the community and make a positive contribution.
We take great care to ensure that each child or young adult has an appropriate peer group.
