Volunteering helps schoolboy dive into paid employment

A Manchester Grammar pupil has found volunteering pays off in more ways than one.

Cameron Brown, 17 , from Bramhall, is just one of the many people every year who find paid employment with skills learned through volunteering.

He will leave school with valuable workplace experience as well as qualifications as well as his academic achievements after volunteering at Seashell Trust.

Anna Brown, Cameron's mum, said: “He volunteered to help with swimming at the Seashell Trust for his silver Duke of Edinburgh Award as he swims and plays water polo for his school. He enjoyed it so much he has qualified as a swimming instructor. He finds it demanding but also enjoys it and gets a sense of achievement.”

Denese Paver, volunteer co-ordinator at Seashell Trust, said: “Cameron joined us last year, volunteering in the pool. He proved to be a whizz with the young people at the swimming lessons. He loved it that much he stayed on following the end of his D of E award.

“We asked him to take his Level 1 Swimming Teacher certificate and now he works for the Seashell Trust part-time. He intends to complete Level 2 this year.”

Seashell Trust is looking for more volunteers to work in its swimming pool.
