Children and Families Minister Edward Timpson has praised internships for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Disabled students are benefiting from a pioneering work placement scheme run by Seashell Trust to help them transition from college to the professional world.

Brian Hill finally reaches the finish line at Trekfest

Dad's 12-hour trek raises £2,500

A dad trekked for 12 hours to raise money for a charity that helps his disabled daughter.

 

Brian Hill, from Mereside Gardens, Whaley Bridge, took part in the annual Trekfest, completing the 27-mile course through the Peak District in under 12 hours. The challenging route took in the Pennine Way and Kinder Scout.

 

He will split the £2500 raised between Seashell Trust and Blythe House Hospice.

Seashell students visit Number 10 for prime minister's Christmas party

Seashell Trust students partied with the prime minister at Number 10 Downing Street.

Cayman and Reims Norton, Harrison Linley Jones, Scarlett Hickey, Sara Asif, Gethin Plant, Shauna Miller, Daniel Hall and Sofia Gawlyk attended a very special celebration with their families and teachers.

It is the fourth year David Cameron has hosted a Christmas party for young people at his official residence.

Students at Seashell Trust got a seasonal surprise when Sir Alex Ferguson dropped in to wish them a merry Christmas.

 

The Manchester United legend met our staff and students.

 

Some of the students have such complex difficulties they did not go home for the holidays. Hard-working staff made sure they didn't miss out on any of the festive fun.

Students saddle up to raise money for specialised bike

All the students at Seashell Trust wanted for Christmas was a new bike.

 

But it is not just any bike and these aren't just any students.

 

Many find it hard to get around independently, which is why bikes are so important to them. Not only can they travel around more easily but it great for keeping fit and improves balance and co-ordination.

Volunteers flew in from across the country to paint the town at Seashell Trust.

 

A team of 19 from BT donned their Santa hats and brushed up on their decorating skills for a festive painting party.

CADS football coach with top FA award

A Seashell Trust football coach has won a top award from the FA for his work in the community.

 

Adam Brown was named the Grass Roots Coach of the Year for Cheshire.

 

More than 30 people were nominated for the award that recognises those who make a difference to football in their local area – the people who dedicate their time to developing young talent and help ensure safety and best practice.

Seashell students are guests of honour at store opening

A food store had some very special guests to cut the ribbon when it reopened after a rebuild.
 

The staff at M&S Food on Alderley Road in Wilmslow have chosen to support Seashell Trust.

 

To celebrate the new shop at the BP Garage, they invited three students from the trust to be guests of honour at the grand reopening.

New internship programme gives students job skills they need

Only seven per cent of people with a learning disability are in paid employment, according to the Office for National Statistics.

 

This week is Learning Disabilities Work Experience Week organised by charity Mencap and Inclusive Employers, which helps employers to develop an inclusive workplace.

 

It aims to improve the employability of people with learning difficulties, and raise awareness of the benefits for businesses in thinking differently about who they recruit.

Whitfield and Brown team on route to raising money for Seashell Trust

Whitfield and Brown building even closer relationship with Seashell Trust

A contractor is proving equally good at building houses and relationships.

 

Whitfield and Brown is managing the build of 17 state-of-the-art homes for Seashell Trust's students the first nine of which are due for completion later this year.

 

At their annual team building event, 14 Whitfield and Brown staff hiked 15 miles in the Lake District to show their support for the profoundly disabled students at Seashell Trust.

Lord Freud got it wrong: disabled people are vital to workforce

Seashell Trust has hit out at Lord Freud's controversial comments about employees with disabilities – and says they have, in fact, a vital role to fulfil in the workforce

 

Lord Freud, welfare reform minister, has been forced to apologise after referring to working people with disabilities as: “There is a group... where actually as you say they're not worth the full wage and actually I'm going to go and think about that particular issue, whether there is something we can do... if someone wants to work for £2 an hour.”
